Smoky Bay Oyster Farm Tours with SA Premium Oysters became part of the Aquaculture Industry of Smoky Bay in 1990 when Jeff and Colleen Holmes made the transition from wheat farming to shellfish farming in the bay. They have spent the past three decades analysing, improving and sampling in order to produce the very best possible quality oysters. Their leases are situated between 3 and 7 km from the jetty in Smoky Bay and are accessed at low tide by barge.
Colleen is also happy to share some of her incredible recipes. She has long been experimenting with various dishes featuring cooked and raw oysters and is happy to share some online and on tours.

SA Premium Oysters welcome visitors to tour their working farm and sample some of their fresh oysters. They are the only oyster lease in South Australia to have a viewing and dining platform overlooking the oyster farm in the middle of Smoky Bay. This allows you to enjoy stunning views while tasting some of the best oysters you’ll likely ever have. It’s ideal for picnics, special events and sunset drinks. Shuck N Sip
This is the ultimate tour for passionate oyster lovers as it enables you to completely immerse yourself in oyster growing life and farm work. The tour includes a barge trip out to the lease where you can learn from an oyster farmer how oysters are grown in the bay. You will also learn how to shuck an oyster from an expert and enjoy the fresh oysters straight out of the water. You’ll then have the opportunity to relax on the beautiful viewing platform with a tasting platter and glass of wine, as you take in everything that you’ve learnt.
Sunset Oyster Session
For a more romantic oyster experience, this late afternoon tour includes a barge trip out to the oyster lease in the bay. You can learn how to grow and shuck an oyster before retreating to the viewing platform for sunset. You’ll get a delicious tasting platter of a dozen oysters with a glass of wine as you get to watch one of the spectacular sunsets that the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula is so well known for.
Shucking Shed Tour
If you’re short on time, the Shucking Shed Tour is another option for an in-depth look at the oyster growing community. While you don’t get the full on-water experience, you can tour the Shucking Shed and look at how oysters are grown and handled over the process. You can also sample some of the fresh oysters with a glass of wine at the end of the tour.

About Smoky Bay
Smoky Bay is a small town on the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula. It’s located off the Flinders Highway, 44km southeast of Ceduna. The town was a former port and is now a popular fishing and seafood hub, most well-known for its aquaculture industry.
Smoky Bay is a popular stop on the drive from Ceduna to Port Lincoln. It makes for either a great day trip from Ceduna or a quiet overnight stop on the Eyre Peninsula. The town has a range of accommodation options including caravan parks and holidays homes. You can also find basic supplies including a general store, petrol station, public BBQ area, playgrounds, golf course and the jetty and boat ramp for fishing.
Things to do in Smoky Bay
Fishing and snorkelling
The beautiful calm waters of Smoky Bay are perfect for fishing and snorkelling. You can fish straight off the jetty or use the boat ramp to head out further into the bay. There is a large safe swimming enclosure next at the jetty for swimming and snorkelling also.
Self-Drive Seafood Trail
Smoky Bay is one of the premier destinations on the Seafood Frontier Trail, a self-driving trip around the Eyre Peninsula and Far West Coast. The trail takes you from Whyalla to Ceduna with stops at numerous coastal towns where you can taste some delicious seafood and head out fishing for yourself. The oyster farm tours at SA Premium Oysters are certainly one of the highlights of the self-drive trail.
Laura Bay Conservation Park
This conservation park is a protected bay and coastline of the Eyre Peninsula. It’s located just 24km north of Smoky Bay, closer to Ceduna. It’s home to fragile vegetation that provides an important feeding ground for sea birds, which migrate to the area from the northern hemisphere every year. You can explore the conservation area on foot or swimming in the water. There is also a camping area located in the park if you want to stay overnight.
St Mary’s Surf Beach
This hidden gem is located 28km south of Smoky Bay. The reef breaks of St Mary’s Bay can get quite high with good swell. The beach is a west-facing bay between Point Brown and Point Dillon, backed by rugged sand dunes and cliffs and access by a dirt road.
